The Cage is Hiring!

CTN needs MORE volunteers

Send me your qualifications and contact info right away if you want to volunteer! Especially if you have already emailed Tara. here's what Tara says:

Just let them all know that they need to be available ALL 3 days of the event (November 18 - 20th) to be cast for 10-12hrs over 2-3 shifts and are responsible for their own lodging.  The Marriott is filling up quickly so if they plan to stay at the hotel they should make a room reservation quickly.   When not assisting they can enjoy the show :)

Also: any students that have experience with merchandise / credit card transactions would be a plus.

Tomas Jech and Jacob Gardner are professional animators from the Games and Film industry. Collectively, their work experience includes Shrek Forever After, Halo Reach, Megamind, and the upcoming Puss in Boots. Tomas is a former Pixar animation intern, and now works as an animator on major game releases. Jacob is a feature film animator. He also co-founded Speaking of Animation (podcast blog), and instructs at iAnimate- an online animation school.

Grad Speaker: Alum Corey Bolwyn!

Fall 2008 grad Corey Bolwyn will deliver the commencement speech at our summer 2011 graduation ceremony on Friday September 23rd at the Sheraton Harbor Island at 4pm. I encourage all MAA students to attend the ceremony, support our class of summer 2011, and listen to the words of one of our top alumni.

Since graduating, Corey has worked on Alice in Wonderland, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Alvin & The Chipmunks: the Squaekquel, and Tangled.

Many of you have found this diagram helpful. It shows the computer labs not being used for classes. Keep in mind a lab might already be reserved for special functions, events, etc.

You may work quietly in any classroom, even if a class is in session.

sorry for any confusion regarding our postponed department social!  We postponed to this Thursday 12-1pm so we could wrap with Comic-Con first. Tara Steinke from CTN Animation Expo will be here again to talk about CTN and raffle off some free 3-day passes. I'll bring pizza.

If you want to participate in some free activities with other students check out these upcoming events. I'll be at the movies on Tuesday 6/28 to see "Bad Teacher" and I'll be at Boomer's on Tuesday July 5th. I challenge you to air hockey, skee ball, or go carts!  --Jason

Summer Quarter event: Week 2 Pizza & CTN Animation Expo

On Friday July 22nd from 12-1pm, Tara Steinke from the CTN Animation Expo will make her yearly visit to tell us about the Expo which is held in November up in Burbank. 

It's a worthwhile convention and all students should attend. I will nominate volunteers to help out at the show so if you're interested let me know.

We'll have some pizza and she will raffle off some tickets to the Expo.

Spike & Mike "New Generation of Animation" screening Fri. July 15th 7pm

For those of you unfamiliar, Spike & Mike was one of the original animation festivals. Spike is a hardcore old dude who, back in the day, helped many animators get recognized by the public. 

The screening will be on our campus, in rooms 145-6-7. Spike will talk about his experiences in the animation community before he screens the latest compilation.

All attendees will get a free DVD as well. The cost is $5 on the day of the show, while they last!

Comic Con Guest Speakers

Hey everyone,

I am working on the details to get Stephen Silver (Character Designer for Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, and everything cool) to come in for a workshop just before Comic Con. He will be bringing in books to sell, so start saving your money now.

Be sure to let us know what type of workshops you would like to have before next quarter starts. All workshops are scheduled the first week of classes. You can email Jason with your requests.

Saturday Workshop: HD-DSLR Cinematography for VFX

Hey Falconites and other budding VFX artists!

Sean Falcon is hosting a workshop on using DSLR cameras for VFX. Bring your own DSLR or use the ones we will have on-hand from the Cage: our two Canon EOS Rebel 2Ti's.

Beldon has created a tutorial and posted it on Vimeo for everyone to access. It describes how to encode and compress your work using Adobe Media Encoder and the h.264 codec. Soon that will be our MAA department's standard so get a jump on it now. If you're already using this then good work-- you are ahead of the game.
